You’re looking after a child, not your own child. Halfway through the night the child wakes up and comes to find you. They had a bad dream. They can’t get back to sleep cause there’s a monster in their room. What do you tell the child and explain to them about monsters and being afraid? How do you get them back to sleep?

You are the Monster
The first monster you have to scare the audience with is yourself. – Wes Craven
When did you last scare yourself? When were you last really scared by something and what was it?
Fictional monsters like zombies, werewolves, vampires and such are not nearly as scary as real things like mortgages, collection calls, being unemployed, law suits, health problems, danger to children and other family. Real things are far scarier because there is less we can do about them and they are real, part of our reality. It is so much easier to read about fictional monsters and just close the book, finish watching the video, at the end. They all go away but for the memory. They go back to being unreal.
Think of the scariest thing you have faced and write about the feelings but change it around to one of the unreal monsters. Put all the fear, the real fear, into an unreal monster. See how real you can make it feel.
Monster Self Help Guides
Molly Harper writes a series of paranormal fiction books about Jane Jameson, vampire librarian. I just finished reading the second book this morning. So nice to be lazy and finish a book while snuggled under the covers in bed.
There was a preview of the next book in the series along with her traditional pretend book excerpt which appear at the start of each chapter in her books. (Confused? You’ll just have to find one of her books and take a look).
The title of the imaginary book being quoted in the third book is: Love Bites: A Female Vampire’s Guide to Less Destructive Relationships. It made me laugh.
Write some ideas for your own self help guide books for monsters, fictional creatures or paranormal types.

One of the Other Games I Play

Adventure Quest – It’s an online (via web browser, no need to download anything special) role playing game. My nephew and I play it and compare scores, monsters fought and so on. There are special events, more often now than when I joined a few years ago. I just recently became a Guardian (paid player) but you can play free as long as you like. Guardians get extras but freebie players don’t get shafted. I played free a long time before paying the one time fee to join. Mainly I did it cause Zack still likes the game even though he is 12 now and very seriously becoming a man, not a boy. Don’t call him a boy! 🙂
