Possibly a group which came about over the judgmental attitude people have for history these days. I'm glad more people are thinking about this. You can't rewrite history, its already in the past. Everything in the past is defenseless against the present and how it is perceived and judged by current and changing ideals. Its not fair to use what is popular or expected now while viewing what was popular and expected then. It really can't be done and it pollutes the history, the people and places that were.

At the Canadian Institute for Historical Education, we believe the past should be approached in all its complexity. Although we now look back from the present, the past existed on its own terms, not ours.

Our aim is to contribute to conversations about Canada’s historical figures, bringing context and candour when they are unjustly maligned or their contributions diminished, in order to promote a deeper understanding and richer appreciation of our shared past.

To ensure that the ‘renaming” of places reflects a fair and balanced treatment of our past and that relevant facts and context inform these decisions. We will work with historians to provide decision makers with easy access to relevant existing historical evidence and analysis, commission new research where it seems necessary, and act as a catalyst for a more informed understanding amongst all Canadians.
