These things are not real. They are phantasmagoria . They were made by dreams, and now that no one is dreaming them any longer they are crumbling away.
Keeping things does feel like preserving them to me. I have kept a lot of what I have, not to collect it but to keep it from being uncared for (physically and mentally). Someone created that book, that teapot, that pretty jar and once its gone it will be forgotten as if the people, the inspiration, the beauty, the history, anything and everything that mattered about it, will just be gone. I like the way Margaret Atwood said it in the quote from her book, above.
