I Read it in Reader's

As read in an old Reader's Digest while waiting somewhere:

My husband was a university student, and money was tight for our family of seven. We were attending a friend's wedding and our four-year-old daughter, Christy, was sitting next to me.

When the minister asked, "Do you take this man for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health?" our daughter turned to me and said in a loud whisper, "You picked 'poorer', didn't you, Mom?"

Communication is so easily misunderstood. Sometimes it is something to laugh at, but not always. A small change in punctuation in the written word can mean a lot. In spoken language we have more to rely on with body language and tone and yet it is easier to mis-hear the words or give them our own interpretation with "select hearing" and other human failings.

Visual Merchandising: Window Display Artist

I like to look at interesting jobs in the arts/ crafts area. So many unique and interesting jobs we just never hear about or never stop to think that someone actually does that and gets paid for it!

Have you thought about being the person who creates window displays before? I have. Even back in high school I considered it as a career option. Too bad I didn't do more about it then. But, you can't be the person you are now in your past life. I'm still hoping for time machines so I could at least whisper in my ear a few times. Until then... I can research and live vicariously.

What Drives You?

I did a personality quiz on BlogThings. Some of you will grimace in pain at just the mention of this site but... don't take too many things as nonsense. You never know what you might learn or where an idea will come from. I found something that has made me think on a BlogThings quiz. I'm not ashamed to admit it.

The quiz is called: What Will Your Life be Like in Ten Years?

One question which came up as part of the quiz was -

You are driven by... (they don't mean your man slave who chauffeurs you around all day)

  • Love
  • Work
  • Fun
  • Competition

Of those four options which would you pick?

I considered all four a few minutes. I had to, because of them I could rule out work, fun and competition. But, I could not rule out love and yet, that seemed far too romantic and pink and frilly for me. It was an interesting revelation. I think it is true. But, not love of any person, love of what I am doing, the things I care about and the things that interest me. Also the people in my life, my family. I'm not in love with anyone but I would have to say that I am driven by love. Which was an interesting thing and not something I would ever have said about myself.

What did you come up with? What drives you? Is it a surprise or have you always been driven this way?

A Life Sentence - Punishment or Euthanasia?

I ended up watching a documentary from the UK about humane methods of performing capital punishment. The show was not discussing the issue of capital punishment but the science of finding the "perfect" method of killing. However, in the end the main point came down to whether capital punishment is meant as a punishment or extermination.

If the court sentences someone to be killed should that be considered a punishment for their crimes or an end to them (both the crimes and the criminal). Is it like killing a rabid dog, mercy killing for a cow about to be butchered or an assisted suicide? Or, is it a punishment where the criminal should feel pain?

What about rehabilitation? Yes, that is going back to the issue of having capital punishment or not. But, if a life sentence usually means life in prison, is capital punishment not something like that? How far is it between life in prison to the end of life? Is one just a way to save money and resources and the other just a way to avoid the ending of a life? Also, if a humane method of capital punishment is used will capital punishment become too simple, too easy and then become a standard for any criminal who gets a life sentence? Is death the real meaning of a life sentence?

It is a very interesting issue which would make a great debate topic.

In the end they did conclude that using nitrogen was the most practical and humane/ neutral method of killing. The show also concluded that their definition of it as the "perfect" method was not the best term as there was the debate over punishment versus euthanasia.

Princess Tatianna, My Dazzling Secret Alter Ego

Once in a while I imagine myself as the beautiful, slender, fashionable and diamond wearing Princess Tatianna. Coming from some old world type of family, whether they be Russian royalty or something touching on the paranormal like Fey creatures. Although my sisters may be the typical blondes, I am always brunette. (Stay true to your roots, even if it eventually has to come out of a bottle). Princess Tatianna, not always her name, has an extensive glamourous and gorgeous wardrobe. The woman must have a palace just for all the clothes I have imagined her wearing at this point.

Quite often she is going to elaborate functions. Quite often she wears someone like Keanu Reeves on her arm because he has the important things like good looks, strength (an assortment of strengths, possibly a few mystic powers thrown in too) and conversation. Quite often Princess Tatianna is in the midst of some adventure. Not always a dramatic adventure. Once she found a lost crown belonging to the dragons, once she led a revolution for the trolls who were being badly picked on, another time she was running away from the dastardly villain on an amazing horse built like a Clydesdale but able to run like it was lighter than air and yet another time she merely had to make polite social conversation at a party thrown in her honour.

I have a lot of fun being Princess Tatianna. She is great company on a long bus ride or while waiting for laundry at the laundry mat. Do you have your own Princess Tatianna, whatever her name and description? Write a little about her. Don't be shy or feel too silly. Everyone should have a dazzling secret identity/ alter ego. Only, why be secret when you can brag about it a little?
